RUG BACKGROUNDS

CHILDRENs ARTWORK

I saw these 2 little joyful masterpieces ,on the wall in a hall of a school  I visited the other day . . .
 . . . .     I love them both . . . .

The 2 B's  =Background  and the Border is important in the top one .. . .
while the clothing designs are the main focal point in the bottom one . . . . .
same decisions we make with every rug we hook!!!

HOOKED CROWS

BACKGROUNDS STUDY

Another of Magdalenas  beautiful designs hooked up by Evelyn Lawrence . .
I am fascinated with the backgrounds and how the contrasts are created with slightly different values using, I assume in the original rug , whatever clothing was at hand.
Who would have thought to add the bit of red on the birds wings? . . .then let it dance a little throughout the entire rug? I love looking and looking at this rug . . . .
Off to the McCord museum to Grandparents Day with the little ones to let them learn how to look at life and things  around them  .
Then home for cocoa . . . .on this cold ,but SUNNY winter day .  . . . . . .

DESIGNING and COLOUR PLANNING

One never knows where or when inspiration will pop up . . .Yesterday while doing the laundry I suddenly got terribly inspired by this DANISH childrens wear fabric . . .I dont know what I might do to change it into a BACKGROUND for my next rug . . .but its in my head and thats a start . . . .
A ''focus fabric'' is always a good place to start  for colour planning if you are stuck . . .usually it is always  colours you like . . .so you have a good feeling about it already . . .then build your design around it . . .
Meanwhile I have got to finish that BORDER I am having such a hard time with . . . . . . .will post soon when its done!I hope before CHRISTMAS!

MORE on BACKGROUNDs HOOKING + DYE SPOT FORMULA

HINTS for THOSE Ss and Cs to give a GREAT LOOK!

I received a few emails regarding difficulties making a nice background with those blessed  Ss and Cs !!
Here is something  that helps to make the background more ,lets say jumbled up . . .
1.
Use a spot dyed piece of fabric in close  related colours . . .say oranges and reds and yellows,(you could use  formula below)
and
2.
make your  Cs  curled into the Ss . . and  CLOSE to each other . . .  .as in diagram above . . .
TRY this SPOT with several Solutions for a Yellowish AMBER BACKGROUND  . . . . . . using MAJIC CARPET DYES

Solution #1

1/8    + 1/16   teas  Orange
1/32  teas   Reddish Brown  + 1 cbw

Solution #

ANTIQUE DOG and KITTEN RUG

ANTIQUE BACKGROUNDS-
e.g.hook with what you have on hand!
This delightful little  mat shows how simple a rug can be and how CHARMING!
Animals look almost cut out templates traced onto the backing and then a couple of trees placed  on either side . . .hooked with what was available . . .and therefore looks almost MONOCHROMATIC in colour feeling . . .
also this rug works from all sides design wise . . . . the straight lines in background add well to the composition . . .I am sure it was by accident!
the little kitten seems to be looking at us  either way  . . . .

LOBSTERS- RED/ORANGE ? or. . . . .

WHY NOT GREEN LOBSTERS?
in . ..
Their real colours?

. . .as in this beautiful antique rug from the
Mahone Bay area?
I Love the BORDER in this rug!
Scallop shells galore . . . . . .
In RED/ORANGE  . . .
GREAT ALSO though . . .with different BACKGROUNDS
